Mixing and measuring, bubbling and boiling, fizzing, foaming and banging – these are just some of the activities students might encounter when they have a Science lesson!
At our school, we believe that fostering a love for science starts early. That’s why we are proud to offer primary science education taught by a specialist science teacher in our state-of-the-art, well-equipped science lab. Our approach is designed to ignite curiosity and encourage a hands-on, practical understanding of the world around us.
I have always been passionate about science; it was my favourite subject in school. This passion led me to study Biomedical Science at Glasgow University, where I deepened my understanding and love for the subject. After graduating, I spent ten years teaching science at a secondary school in London. During that time, I gained valuable experience and refined my teaching skills.
Seeking new challenges, I moved to Pownall Hall School, where I thoroughly enjoy teaching science from Year 1 to Year 6 in our well-equipped science lab. At Pownall Hall, I strive to bring science to life for my students, inspiring curiosity and excitement about the wonders of the world around us. I look forward to continuing to nurture a love for science in my classroom for years to come.

Children are naturally curious about the world around them, our early years children at Pownall are actively encouraged to test out their curiosity and explore to gain new knowledge. In the EYFS early science skills are taught through the area of learning ‘Understanding the World’. It is introduced indirectly through activities that encourage every child to explore, problem solve, observe, predict, think, make decisions and talk about the world around them. Whether this be exploring ice melting and changing state or looking after plants; discussing what they need.
In Key Stage 1 (KS1), students embark on their scientific journey by exploring fundamental topics such as:
Our specialist science teacher uses engaging activities and experiments to help students grasp these concepts. Whether they are growing plants, observing animals, or experimenting with different materials, our young scientists are encouraged to ask questions and seek answers through hands-on investigations.
As students progress to Key Stage 2 (KS2), they delve deeper into more complex topics, such as:
In our well-equipped science lab, students use modern tools and resources to conduct experiments and investigations. From building circuits and creating simple machines to exploring the properties of light and conducting chemical reactions, our practical-based curriculum ensures that students are actively involved in their learning process.
We also offer a weekly Science club and STEM club that takes place after school. These clubs are always popular, with enthusiastic participation from the children.
