Music

Music & Drama

“Music is so many things… It is mathematics, it is science, it is a universal language for those who are open for it. It is history, it is culture, it is physical education, it is geography. Music develops insight. Music is therapy for those who need it. Music is a wonderful, high-speed dual carriageway to a human mind and innermost emotions”

– Sakari Oramo

The Music department at Pownall plays a crucial part in each pupil’s academic development. Our aim is to stimulate and develop in our students a passion and love for Music. Experience, fulfilment, and enjoyment for all, are our top priority in addition to striving for the highest possible standards.

Early Years and Pre-Prep

We have a vibrant and exciting Music Department in the Pre Prep and EYFS at Pownall, with weekly lessons being held in our wonderful Music room.

Creativity and discovery is at the heart of our music making. We sing, play, dance, listen and even compose using fun props, puppets and many of our wonderful instruments and resources we have at school.

In the Pre Prep and EYFS we strongly believe that music engages, entertains, supports all areas of learning and has positive effects on wellbeing.

In the Pre Prep we all enjoy rehearsing together every week and performing in our Pre Prep Choir, as well as our Instrumental Group where we play both tuned and untuned instruments and begin the exciting journey of ensemble playing, which develops all areas of our musical learning.

One of the many highlights of our year has to be the incredible Christmas Nativities we produce, and which take place in our very special Henry Boddington Theatre.

In all years throughout EYFS and Pre Prep we produce wonderfully entertaining and fun performances combining our high standards in musical singing and playing, and our acting and narration! It is fun, exciting, rewarding, exhilarating and everything in between.

Prep

In the prep school, each year group receives two music lessons per week during which our students are exposed to a variety of musical opportunities through singing, listening, composing and performing. As well as their weekly individual instrumental lessons, our students are encouraged to join our ensembles and choirs. We aim to celebrate our students’ achievements throughout the year through a wide range of performance opportunities. These include regular and informal events and end of term concerts, play productions, and competitions.

Individual Lessons and Groups

With the help of a team of peripatetic musicians, we offer our pupils individual instrumental lessons on piano, singing, strings, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. These are timetabled throughout the week.

Ensembles and groups in the Prep School include Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Chamber Choir, Pownall Ensemble, and String Group.
