Pastoral care is of paramount importance at Pownall. As part of our ‘Whole Child’ approach, each child’s social and emotional needs are cared for just as much as their academic progression.
Care is principally provided by the form teacher and the form teaching assistant. They are the main people of reference for the children. Our site is secure, and we ensure that children are always seen and overseen in the classroom and on the playing field.
Every child knows and is encouraged to behave according to our “Golden Rules”, which are posted in every classroom.
There is a School Council, designed to encourage pupils to feel part of the school community, to take responsibility for their own actions, and to take an interest in being part of a caring, happy school.
The views and opinions of the School Council are greatly valued; matters arising from School Council meetings are passed on to the Leadership Team for consideration.
We also operate a school buddy system, which is very popular with younger and older pupils alike. Overseen by staff and the Year 6 Prefects, children in Key Stage 2 visit the Early Years/Key Stage 1 playground once a week to forge links and play with the younger pupils.
The benefits work both ways and help reinforce lessons in social responsibility, and, of course, the Golden Rules.
