Pre-Prep at Pownall Hall School

Forms 1–2 | Ages 5-7

Pre-Prep is a pivotal stage in a child’s education. It is where children move from the play-based Early Years into more structured learning, while still being carefully supported as young learners.

At Pownall Hall, Pre-Prep provides a secure, well-judged transition. Children begin to take greater responsibility for their learning, develop focus and stamina, and build confidence in reading, writing and mathematics, all within an environment that values kindness, reassurance and individual progress.

This is where children settle into school life properly, feeling known, supported and ready for what comes next.

A thoughtful approach to learning

Our Pre-Prep curriculum is deliberately designed to be clear, structured and age-appropriate. Lessons are purposeful and well paced, giving children the confidence that comes from understanding what is expected of them and knowing they can succeed. Children benefit from:

  • consistent routines that support independence

  • small class sizes with high levels of adult guidance

  • secure teaching of core skills in English and Maths

  • time to practise, revisit and embed learning

Progress is carefully monitored, and teaching is adapted to meet individual needs without unnecessary pressure.

Specialist teaching that adds depth

From Pre-Prep onwards, children are taught by subject specialists who bring expertise and consistency to the curriculum.

Weekly specialist teaching includes:

  • French, taught by a native speaker
  • Science, delivered in our dedicated Science Lab
  • Music
  • PE and Games
  • Art and Design and Technology
  • Computing
  • Forest School

Specialist teaching at this stage helps children become comfortable learning from different adults and prepares them well for the structure of Prep.

Building confidence and communication

Clear communication is a priority in Pre-Prep. Children are encouraged to speak clearly, listen carefully and share ideas with confidence. Through:

  • class assemblies

  • performances in our Boddington Theatre

  • music, drama and speaking opportunities

children learn to present themselves calmly and confidently, skills that support both academic learning and personal development.

Meet the Head of Pre-Prep

Preparing children for Prep

The move from Pre-Prep to Prep is carefully planned and supported. Throughout Forms 1 and 2, children develop the organisational habits, confidence and independence needed for the next stage of school life.

Teachers work closely with families to ensure transitions are smooth and well timed. By the time children move into Prep, they do so feeling secure, capable and ready

A calm, purposeful beginning

Pre-Prep at Pownall Hall is not about rushing children forward. It is about building strong foundations, good habits and quiet confidence.

Children leave Pre-Prep settled, ready and proud of what they can do.

We warmly invite you to visit the school, meet our staff and see Pre-Prep in action during a normal school day.
