School Facilities

Pownall Hall School has one of the most beautiful settings that a school in Cheshire can offer. Set to the backdrop of our beautiful arts and crafts, grade 2* listed hall, our 8 beautiful acres of stunning grounds are located in the heart of Wilmslow, Cheshire.

Science Laboratory

Pownall School is proud to house a state-of-the-art science laboratory, installed in 2022. Purpose-built for hands-on learning, the lab supports practical investigations across biology, chemistry, and physics. Children work collaboratively at group tables, each fitted with gas taps for Bunsen burners, electrical sockets, and sinks for easy clean-up.

The lab is fully stocked with high-quality apparatus, from beakers, flasks, and pipettes to digital scales and stopwatches. Specialist resources include magnets, springs, force meters, electrical circuits, coloured LEDs, and ray boxes, as well as chemicals for experiments. For biology, children benefit from outdoor tools such as pond dipping kits and pooters, alongside anatomical models including a skeleton, spine, teeth, and animal bones.

Sports

SPORTS FIELD | ASTRO PITCH | SPORTS HALL

Sport is in abundance at Pownall and is taught by our specialist sports staff to all of our pupils from Nursery through to Form 6. We have a strong focus on team sports and play and take part in regular fixtures, festivals and tournaments throughout the year. The broad range of sports we take part in provides the children with the experience of competing on a regular basis.

  • Sports field adapting to seasonal sports with cricket strip, athletics track, and football and rugby pitches
  • Astro Pitch, for all-weather use, particularly for hockey and netball
  • Sports Hall, housing a basketball court, gymnastic equipment, short tennis court, indoor cricket nets and bowling machines

Art Studio

Nestled within the historic 18th-century Boddington Theatre building, our Art and Design Studio serves as a vibrant haven for creativity and innovation, designed to nurture artistic expression, imagination, and technical skill. This unique space features an on-site clay kiln that allows pupils to experiment with ceramics, from hand-building and throwing pots to glazing and firing their creations, as well as a printing press that offers opportunities to explore various printmaking techniques, including etching, screen printing, and relief printing. Adorned with beautiful wooden architectural carvings that reflect the building’s rich history, the studio also includes spacious work areas that accommodate a variety of art-making activities, from painting and drawing to sculpture and mixed media, flooded with natural light, providing optimal conditions for children to bring their creations to life.

Boddington Theatre

We are so very lucky to have our very own Henry Boddington Theatre, which is at the heart of all things music and drama at Pownall. From the age of two, our children are regularly given the opportunity to take centre stage and to sing, perform, and build their confidence. Our specialist Music and Drama teachers ignite a passion for music and performance, whilst our junior, senior, and chamber choirs, ensembles and Form Groups perform on a regular basis. Once a year we have our Form 6 school leavers’ production which is really something quite special, often with not a dry eye in the house!

Library

Pownall School is proud to house a dedicated library at the heart of our 400-year-old hall. Designed as a calm and inspiring space, the library provides children with the opportunity to explore a wide range of books, nurture a love of reading, and develop independent learning skills.

Thanks to the generous support of our PSA, the library has been carefully planned to be both welcoming and practical. It offers cosy areas for quiet reading, shelves filled with carefully curated titles, and space for group activities such as storytelling, research, and book clubs. The library is an important part of school life, giving every child time to pause, reflect, and grow through stories and ideas.

Outdoor Learning

FOREST SCHOOL | WILDLIFE POND | OUTDOOR CLASSROOM | POWNALL GARDENS

Being outdoors, in the fresh air, gives children a different perspective on life and is hugely beneficial for their well-being. The children often take part in marshmallow toasting, leaf printing, den building and bug hunting but they also have time to just be and play. Whether that be swinging on the rope swing, making mud pies or climbing the trees, Forest School allows the children to feel a sense of freedom and learn who they are and what limitations they may have.
