The first step on the Pownall Pathway
Wrens, Robins, Tawny Owls and Barn Owls | Ages 6 months – 2 years
At Pownall Hall School, our Woodland Nursery provides a carefully considered beginning to a long-term educational journey. Welcoming children from 6 months to 3 years, this stage is about far more than childcare. It is where confidence, curiosity and secure relationships are established, laying the foundations for everything that follows at Pownall.
Set within our school grounds and led by experienced Early Years professionals, Woodland Nursery offers a calm, nurturing environment where children feel safe, known and valued from their very first day. Our approach is deliberately aligned with the wider school, ensuring continuity, familiarity and a natural progression into Kindergarten and beyond.
Our Woodland Nursery is designed to feel warm, reassuring and unhurried, inspired by the Danish concept of Hygge. Natural materials, soft textures and carefully considered spaces create an environment that supports emotional wellbeing, independence and exploration.
High adult-to-child ratios allow for meaningful interactions, close observation and genuine relationships. All staff are highly qualified and undertake regular paediatric first aid training, ensuring children are cared for with professionalism and confidence.
6 months – 2 years
Children begin their Pownall journey in either the Wren Room or Robin Room, depending on availability. These rooms provide a gentle, responsive introduction to school life, where routines mirror home as closely as possible.
Spaces are thoughtfully arranged to include:
active areas for movement and sensory play
cosy areas for rest, stories and quiet moments
Each child’s routine, preferences and needs are carefully discussed during induction to ensure a smooth, secure transition into nursery life.
2 – 3 years
As children turn two, they move into either Barn Owls or Tawny Owls, continuing their Woodland Nursery experience until their third birthday.
These rooms offer larger, engaging spaces that encourage:
independence and choice
communication and collaboration
curiosity-led learning
Children’s interests guide planning, ensuring they feel heard, confident and motivated. Familiar staff and consistent routines ensure transitions are seamless and reassuring.
Our Woodland Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, brought to life through an “in the moment” approach. Practitioners observe children closely and respond to their interests, creating learning opportunities that feel natural, purposeful and engaging.
The curriculum covers:
Communication and language
Physical development
Personal, social and emotional development
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the world
Expressive arts and design
Children are supported and celebrated through regular observations, daily feedback, parent meetings and their first written school report.
Children in the Woodland Nursery benefit from specialist-led sessions that mirror the wider school experience, including:
French
Physical Education and Multi-Sports
Music
Forest School
Yoga
These sessions are delivered in a playful, age-appropriate way, helping children grow in confidence while becoming familiar with specialist teachers, shared spaces and routines.
“The Robins have surpassed our expectations. My son and I truly feel part of a family, and I feel completely confident leaving him each day.”
Time outdoors is an essential part of daily life in the Woodland Nursery. With immediate access to our extensive grounds, children spend time exploring, observing and learning in nature.
Forest School sessions, outdoor play and access to wider school facilities support physical development, resilience and a strong connection to the natural world.
Every child is supported by a dedicated Key Person who:
oversees their development
provides emotional reassurance
builds strong relationships with families
This ensures children feel secure, understood and supported as individuals.
“What impressed us most was the personal approach. Staff really know our child, and the transition between rooms was seamless.”
The Woodland Nursery is open all year round, with flexible options including term-time only places. As children approach their third birthday, they transition naturally into Kindergarten, where the school-day structure begins and the next stage of the Pownall Pathway unfolds.
This progression is carefully managed, familiar and positive – children move forward with confidence, already feeling part of the wider school community.
The Woodland Nursery at Pownall Hall School is where children begin to build the confidence, security and curiosity that will carry them through their education. It is the first step in a carefully designed pathway, led by expert practitioners who understand the importance of these early years.
