At Pownall Hall School, scholarships are awarded to recognise potential, commitment and promise, and to support pupils who are ready to be challenged within a nurturing and highly supportive prep school environment.
Our scholarship programme is designed for children who will benefit from additional academic stretch, personalised guidance and enrichment as they progress towards senior school entry. Throughout this journey, pupils are known, supported and encouraged to develop confidence, independence and ambition.
Scholarship provision at Pownall Hall is particularly suited to families seeking a thoughtful and structured route through the 11+ process, underpinned by strong pastoral care and close partnership with parents.
Preparation is tailored to the individual child and the senior schools being considered, ensuring that challenge is balanced with wellbeing and enjoyment of school life.
We are pleased to invite applications for a limited number of Academic Scholarships, designed to support high-achieving pupils as they enter an important stage of their preparation for senior school.
This opportunity is well suited to families who value:
Expert preparation for independent and grammar school entry
Specialist teaching delivered in small classes
High academic expectations balanced with strong pastoral care
Opportunities to contribute to the wider life of the school
A warm, inclusive and ambitious prep school environment
Our Scholarships are intended for pupils who demonstrate strong academic potential, a positive attitude to learning and a willingness to engage fully in school life.
Successful candidates are typically children who:
Show curiosity, resilience and a genuine enjoyment of learning
Are ready to benefit from academic stretch alongside strong pastoral support
Contribute positively to the classroom and wider school community
Approach challenge with confidence and a growth mindset
Scholarship pupils are expected to uphold the values of Pownall Hall School, setting a positive example through their attitude, behaviour and commitment to learning.
“The majority of pupils leaving Year 6 are awarded places at their first-choice senior schools, and many are awarded scholarships across a range of academic and other disciplines.
- Independent Schools Inspectorate, October 2024”
Our aim is to ensure that pupils approach assessments with confidence, resilience and a strong sense of self-belief.
Scholarships carry a partial remission of fees, awarded in recognition of academic promise and commitment. The level of remission is discussed individually with families at the point of offer.
Pupils awarded an Scholarship also benefit from a comprehensive and carefully structured programme of support, in addition to enrolment on our gifted and talented programme, tailored to their individual strengths and the requirements of their chosen senior schools.
This includes:
Familiarity with a range of assessment styles and exam techniques
Regular verbal and non-verbal reasoning practice
Access to online platforms aligned with senior school entry requirements
One-to-one and small group interview preparation
Mock assessments
Clear, personalised guidance for parents throughout the process
We strongly encourage families considering a scholarship application to visit Pownall Hall School.
Visits take place during a normal school day and are led one-to-one by the Headmaster, offering an opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the school, meet staff, and explore whether Pownall Hall is the right fit for your child.
