Creative Arts

At Pownall Hall School, the Creative Arts sit at the heart of how children learn to think, make and express ideas. Through specialist-led teaching in Art and Design and Design and Technology, pupils are encouraged to explore materials, solve problems and bring ideas to life with purpose and confidence.

Creativity at Pownall is not treated as an ‘extra’. It is a serious, structured and highly valued part of the curriculum, developing originality, resilience and practical intelligence alongside technical skill. Children are taught to observe closely, plan carefully, adapt ideas and take pride in the process as well as the outcome.

From the Early Years through to Form 6, pupils benefit from specialist facilities, expert teaching and time to work deeply. The result is confident young makers and thinkers who are able to approach creative challenges with independence, curiosity and skill.

Subject Leadership

Creative Arts at Pownall Hall is led by two specialist Heads of Subject, ensuring depth, progression and high expectations across both artistic and technical disciplines.

Mrs Belinda Cutts

Head of Art and Design

Mrs Cutts has been teaching at Pownall Hall since 2016 and brings a strong background in Art History and Primary Education. She leads Art and Design across the school with a focus on observation, technique and individual creative voice.

Her approach balances freedom and structure, allowing children to explore materials and ideas while steadily building skill and confidence. Pupils are encouraged to take creative risks, refine their work and develop a strong sense of pride in their outcomes.

Mr William Cross

Head of Design and Technology

Mr Cross joined Pownall Hall in 2018 after teaching Design and Technology at secondary level. With a background in Architectural Design and Technology, he brings a rigorous, practical approach to the subject, rooted in real-world problem solving.

He leads Design and Technology from Form 1 onwards, guiding pupils through the full design process – from initial ideas and planning to making, testing and evaluating. His lessons develop independence, precision and technical understanding, preparing pupils well beyond primary expectations.

Art and Design at Pownall

Art and Design at Pownall Hall develops visual literacy, creative confidence and technical skill. Pupils work with a wide range of media including drawing, painting, printing, textiles, sculpture, ceramics and mixed media, supported by excellent facilities including on-site kilns and specialist equipment.

Children are taught to observe carefully, explore different techniques and develop personal responses to artists, architects and designers from a range of periods and cultures. Sketchbooks are used thoughtfully to record ideas, practise skills and reflect on progress.

As pupils move through the school, they are encouraged to refine their technique, articulate their creative choices and develop a personal style. The emphasis is on depth, quality and thoughtful making rather than quick outcomes.

Design and Technology at Pownall

Design and Technology at Pownall Hall is a highly practical, hands-on subject that challenges pupils to think, plan and solve problems. Children learn how things work, how materials behave and how ideas can be improved through testing and refinement.

From Form 1, pupils are introduced to the full design process. They learn to research, design, make and evaluate products using a wide range of materials and techniques. Projects may include card and paper engineering, textiles, electronic circuits, pneumatics and mechanical systems such as levers and pulleys.

Safe and confident use of tools is taught explicitly, helping pupils develop independence and practical competence. The subject goes far beyond simple craft, encouraging logical thinking, precision and resilience when ideas do not work first time.

Creative Arts through the School

Early Years

In the Early Years, creativity begins with exploration. Children are given time, space and materials to experiment freely, developing fine motor skills, confidence and curiosity. Much of their early artwork is process-based, allowing children to focus on the experience of making rather than the finished result.

Through art, construction and early design experiences, children begin to plan, adapt and talk about their ideas, laying strong foundations for later learning.

Pre-Prep

In Pre-Prep, specialist teaching in Art and Design and Design and Technology introduces more structure and intention. Children explore colour, pattern, texture, form and materials while beginning to plan their work and make choices about how to achieve an outcome.

In Design and Technology, pupils develop an understanding of simple mechanisms and materials, learning how designs can be adapted and improved. Creativity is closely linked with thinking, problem solving and communication.

Prep

In Prep, pupils work with increasing independence and technical control. In Art and Design, they use sketchbooks to develop ideas, practise techniques and refine outcomes across a wide range of media. Access to specialist equipment allows children to work at a level rarely seen in primary education.

In Design and Technology, project-based learning becomes more complex. Pupils apply their knowledge to increasingly demanding challenges, combining creativity with technical understanding and safe, accurate making. Children leave Prep confident in their ability to design, evaluate and improve their own work.

Creativity with Purpose

The Creative Arts at Pownall Hall prepare children for far more than the next stage of education. Through Art and Design and Design and Technology, pupils develop skills that will be vital in the future – originality, adaptability, problem solving and the confidence to turn ideas into reality.

By treating creativity with the same seriousness as academic subjects, Pownall ensures that children leave with the ability to think differently, work independently and approach challenges with confidence.
