Mathematics at Pownall Hall School

Building confident thinkers for today and the future

At Pownall Hall School, mathematics is taught as a way of thinking, not just a subject to be completed. Children are taught to understand how numbers work, explain their ideas clearly and approach unfamiliar problems with confidence. Lessons focus on making sense of concepts, spotting patterns and applying learning in practical, real-world situations, so pupils know not only how to do something, but why it works.

From the earliest years through to Form 6, children are encouraged to persevere, to talk through their thinking and to view challenge as part of learning. This steady, structured approach builds strong foundations, quiet confidence and problem-solving skills that support success across the curriculum and prepare pupils well for senior school and beyond.

Raising the Bar in Mathematics

Our mathematics curriculum has been thoughtfully reviewed and strengthened to ensure pupils develop secure foundations alongside ambitious academic progress.

Drawing on the principles of the highly regarded White Rose Maths approach, teaching at Pownall emphasises mastery, reasoning and problem-solving. Children are encouraged to make connections between concepts, develop precise mathematical vocabulary and apply their learning with confidence.

From as early as Form 1, pupils regularly work with structured word problems, strengthening analytical thinking and comprehension skills that are vital for future learning and 11+ success.

By the end of Form 5, children have completed the full Primary Mathematics curriculum, allowing Form 6 to focus on consolidation, exam technique and confidence rather than acceleration.

Mathematics is celebrated across the school through themed events such as Pi Day, International Numeracy Day and whole-school competitions including Times Tables challenges. Learning is also woven into other subjects, helping pupils understand the relevance and power of mathematics in everyday life.

This ambitious yet carefully paced approach ensures pupils are well prepared academically, calm under pressure and confident in their understanding.

Head of Mathematics

Mrs Caroline Hyland, BA (Hons), QTS

Caroline Hyland joined Pownall Hall School in 2023 and brings over 17 years of experience across both independent and state education.

As Head of Maths, Caroline oversees the mathematics curriculum across the school, ensuring it is carefully sequenced, progressive and aligned with the most effective, research-informed teaching approaches. She is passionate about building strong foundations, confidence and enjoyment in mathematics, supporting pupils to develop fluency alongside deep conceptual understanding.

Caroline works closely with teaching staff to maintain consistency and high expectations, while also collaborating with the SEND team to ensure every child is appropriately supported and challenged. Her calm, encouraging approach helps pupils feel secure, capable and motivated in their learning.

Mathematics in the Early Years

In the Early Years, mathematics is woven naturally into play, exploration and everyday experiences. Our aim is to develop confident, curious learners who enjoy engaging with numbers, patterns and problem-solving from the very start of their Pownall journey.

Children develop a secure understanding of numbers to 10, exploring relationships, patterns and quantities through frequent, varied and meaningful opportunities. Practical activities support early counting, comparison, addition and subtraction, alongside rich experiences in shape, space and measure.

A strong emphasis is placed on positive mathematical language and mindset. Children are encouraged to have a go, talk about what they notice and see mistakes as part of learning, helping to build confidence and resilience from the outset.

Pre-Prep Mathematics

Pre-Prep mathematics builds on the strong foundations established in EYFS, nurturing curiosity, confidence and understanding.

Children are immersed in hands-on learning using concrete resources such as Numicon, tens frames, base ten equipment, counters and beads. This supports a deep understanding of mathematical concepts before moving gradually towards pictorial and abstract representations.

As pupils progress through Form 2, there is an increasing focus on recording, reasoning and explaining thinking clearly. Children are supported, stretched and challenged appropriately, with opportunities to extend learning beyond age-related expectations when ready.

Prep Mathematics

In Prep, mathematics becomes increasingly sophisticated while maintaining our focus on understanding, reasoning and confidence.

Mental arithmetic skills are developed systematically, with structured starter activities that build speed, accuracy and strategic thinking. Children are taught efficient methods, flexible strategies and mathematical shortcuts that promote confidence and fluency.

Technology is used meaningfully to enhance learning, offering interactive challenges, self-paced practice and opportunities for independent consolidation. Open-ended investigations and problem-solving tasks encourage deeper thinking, pattern recognition and logical reasoning.

All Primary Mathematics objectives are completed by the end of Form 5, ensuring pupils are academically secure, adaptable and well prepared for senior school mathematics.

11+ Preparation

11+ preparation at Pownall Hall is carefully structured, gradual and supportive.

From Form 5, pupils are gently introduced to the style and thinking required for senior school entrance exams, building familiarity without pressure. In Form 6, teaching focuses on exam technique, reasoning strategies and confidence-building through high-quality practice materials and past papers.

A dedicated summer school supports children ahead of the autumn term, helping to re-establish routines, reinforce key skills and approach the year with confidence.

Throughout the process, children are supported academically and emotionally. We work closely with families to guide school choices and ensure each child is prepared for the next stage of their education with confidence, resilience and a genuine love of learning.
