Science Lab Grand Opening

British Science Week (BSW) is an annual event lasting 10 days and celebrates science and maths, amongst other subjects. People of all ages across the UK are encouraged to organise and take part in events and activities in recognition of BSW. Each year there is a different theme – this year’s theme is ‘connections’.

We started the week with Mrs Dalton hosting the grand opening of our brand new, state of the art science lab, for which we were incredibly grateful to have AstraZeneca’s Mrs Castro Northrop to cut the ribbon. Annouska and Jemimah presented a thank you card created by the school to the PSA.

We then held a ‘Specialist afternoon’, where parents were invited to come in to see our fantastic new state of the art science lab and up to date equipment. They were also able to talk to Mrs Dalton about the planned curriculum for each year group, look through exercise books and talk to children from each year group about the topics they have covered this year.

In Science lessons, children carried out a range of activities designed to experiment with, investigate and explore different kinds of connections. This included chromatography butterflies, string telephones, electrical circuits, growing a rainbow and a STEM challenge to build a bridge.

In Science Club, Form 4 gained their Bunsen Burner licence. They can confidently name all the parts of a Bunsen Burner and can safely light the Bunsen Burner and adjust the flame. They were the first group to use our new Bunsen Burners and test out our new gas taps. Exciting!

To round off BSW, all the children are invited to take part in 3 British Science Week competitions. We have already had some fantastic entries for the poster competition and we look forward to receiving many more.

Wow, what a week!
